First Boat Trip: Complete Checklist for Beginners
Your first boat trip in Rio de Janeiro is coming up and you don't know where to start? Relax. This experience will be unforgettable -- and with a little preparation, you'll enjoy every minute without any stress.
We've put together this complete checklist for first-time boat trip goers. From booking to disembarkation, every step is covered. Save this page, print it if you prefer, and arrive at Marina da Glória with total confidence.
1 to 2 Weeks Before: Plan Your Trip
Planning ahead ensures you get the best boat, the best route, and no last-minute surprises. Start here:
- Choose your boat: WeBoat has 5 boats of its own for 12 to 22 people, plus partner boats for larger groups. Not sure which one to pick? Use our boat comparison tool to see capacity, prices, and features side by side.
- Pick your route: From Mureta da Urca to Ilhas Cagarras, each route offers a different experience. For your first trip, routes like Praia Vermelha and Mureta da Urca are great -- calmer waters and incredible scenery.
- Choose extra services: Want BBQ on board, open bar, or decoration? These services are optional but transform the trip. For a first trip, the all inclusive package is the most popular.
- Confirm the number of guests: The number of people determines which boat is ideal. Groups of up to 15 people fit on the WeBoat 32 (starting at R$ 2,300), and the more people, the lower the cost per person.
- Book via WhatsApp: Contact the team, let them know your preferred date, number of people, and route. Booking is quick and personalized.
- Receive confirmation and payment instructions: After booking, you'll receive all the details via WhatsApp, including the meeting point and payment methods (PIX, credit card up to 3 installments, PayPal).
Tip for first-timers
Book at least 1 week in advance, especially for weekends and holidays. The most popular boats sell out quickly. Learn more at how it works for the full process.
The Day Before: Final Preparations
The trip is tomorrow! Here's what to do the night before to make sure everything goes perfectly:
- Check the weather forecast: The trip runs in sunny or overcast conditions, but in case of heavy rain or rough seas, WeBoat reschedules at no cost. Keep an eye on the forecast and stay in touch with the team.
- Prepare what to wear: Swimwear underneath, a cover-up or light t-shirt on top, and a change of clothes for after. Check our complete guide on what to wear on a boat trip.
- Charge your phone and bring a portable charger: You'll want to take plenty of photos and videos. A power bank ensures battery all day long.
- If you're bringing your own food and drinks (BYO): Prepare a cooler with ice, canned or plastic-bottled drinks (no glass!), snacks, and water. The boat has coolers on board, but bringing your own makes organizing easier.
What to Bring: Printable Checklist
Print this list or save it on your phone. Check each item before leaving home:
- ✓ SPF 50+ sunscreen -- The reflection off the water intensifies the sun. Reapply every 2 hours.
- ✓ Sunglasses with a strap -- The strap prevents losing your sunglasses in the water. Essential!
- ✓ Towel -- For drying off after swimming and sunbathing on deck.
- ✓ Swimwear + change of clothes -- Wear your swimsuit under your clothes and bring a dry set for the return.
- ✓ Flip-flops or sandals -- Footwear that can get wet. No closed-toe shoes.
- ✓ Cap or hat -- Extra sun protection, especially between 10am and 3pm.
- ✓ Waterproof phone case -- Protects your device from saltwater and allows underwater photos. Available from R$ 20 at any store.
- ✓ Motion sickness medication (Dramamine) -- Take it 30 minutes before boarding, as a precaution. Even people who've never felt seasick may experience it on their first trip. See more tips in our article on seasickness prevention.
- ✓ Cash for tipping -- R$ 50 to R$ 100 per crew member is customary. Tipping is optional but greatly appreciated by the crew.
What NOT to Bring
Some items can ruin the experience or even cause accidents. Leave these at home:
- High heels or platform shoes: The boat deck is slippery when wet. Wear flip-flops or go barefoot.
- Large suitcases or bulky backpacks: Space on board is optimized. Bring only what you need in a waterproof bag or small tote.
- Unnecessary valuables: Expensive watches, jewelry, and items you wouldn't want to get wet or lose. Leave them in the car or at home.
- Glass bottles and cups: Glass on board is prohibited for safety reasons. Use aluminum cans, plastic bottles, or disposable cups.
During the Trip: Essential Tips
The big day is here! Follow these guidelines to make the most of it -- and stay completely safe:
- Arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled time at Marina da Glória: This gives you time to board calmly, store your belongings, and hear the captain's instructions before setting sail.
- Listen to the captain's instructions: On your first trip, the crew member explains the basic safety rules, shows where the life jackets are, and how to move around on board. Pay attention -- it's 2 minutes that make all the difference.
- Apply sunscreen BEFORE boarding: In the excitement of boarding, many people forget. Apply sunscreen while still on the pier, 15 minutes before direct sun exposure. The water reflection can cause sunburn in less than 1 hour.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the trip, especially if you're consuming alcoholic drinks. The combination of sun, wind, and alcohol dehydrates you quickly. Alternate: one water for every drink.
- Be careful when moving while the boat is in motion: Always hold onto something when walking around the boat, especially when going to the bathroom or changing areas. The sea can surprise you with unexpected waves.
- If you feel seasick, look at the horizon: Go to an open area of the boat (preferably the stern), fix your gaze on the horizon line, and breathe deeply. Avoid staying in enclosed areas or looking at your phone for too long. More tips in our seasickness prevention guide.
The golden rule for your first trip: relax and trust the crew. The captain knows these waters like no one else and is there to ensure your safety and fun.
After the Trip: Wrapping Up the Experience
The trip is over, but the experience continues. Don't forget these final steps:
- Tip the crew: It's not mandatory, but it's a way of acknowledging the captain and crew's work. R$ 50 to R$ 100 per crew member, split among the group, is customary.
- Ask the photographer for the photos: If you hired a photography service, arrange photo delivery at disembarkation. They're usually sent via link within 48 hours.
- Leave a Google review: Your review helps other customers choose with confidence and helps us improve. Leave your honest opinion -- we truly value feedback.
- Start thinking about your next adventure: Now that you know the basics, how about exploring a different route next time? Ilhas Cagarras and Itaipu & Camboinhas are great options for those who want to go further.
Frequently Asked Questions About Your First Boat Trip
Do I need to know how to swim to go on the trip?
No. All WeBoat boats have life jackets and mandatory safety equipment. Swimming during the trip is optional -- you can enjoy 100% of the time on board. If you want to get in the water and don't know how to swim, wear a life jacket and stay on the floating noodles, always with supervision.
Can children join the trip?
Yes! Children of all ages are welcome. We have children's life jackets on board. We recommend extra attention with little ones, children-specific sunscreen, and plenty of water. For trips with children, calm water routes like Mureta da Urca are the most recommended.
What if I get seasick during the trip?
Seasickness is more common than you might think and affects even experienced boaters on rougher days. The best prevention is to take Dramamine 30 minutes before boarding. During the trip, stay in open areas, look at the horizon, and avoid using your phone for extended periods. Read our complete guide on seasickness for more tips. Check the FAQ page for other questions.
Can I bring my own food and drinks?
Yes! The BYO (Bring Your Own) policy allows you to bring your own food and drinks at no additional cost. Just remember: no glass on board. Use aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and containers with lids. If you'd rather not worry about it, hire our BBQ and open bar service and leave everything to us.
